Kumon Maths accelerates Kaiden’s learning in school

For Kaiden, 12 years old, Kumon has been a jump start for school. The aspiring car mechanic, who studies Kumon Maths, is no longer struggling at school.

“Kumon Maths has helped me to catch up to my year level in school, which I feel good about”, Kaiden said. “It keeps me wanting to learn and to keep improving.”

Kaiden has studied with Kumon since 2015 at Kumon Beeliar Education Centre in Perth. Kumon focusses on helping students build foundational literacy and numeracy skills, and student’s  ability to solve problems by themselves.

Kumon students also learn at a level that is defined by their current ability. They aren’t pushed ahead or held back because of their age.

“This allows him to build his confidence because he’s not being forced to learn something in a hurry and then move on”, explained his mother, Natalie.

Kaiden said that Kumon will help him throughout his later life.

“It’s taught me to focus and concentrate a lot on getting my work completed and try and solve problems on my own”, Kaiden said.

“Hopefully if I get a mechanic’s apprenticeship I can use these skills in my studies and workplace”.

Kumon Congratulates Trident Automotive

Kumon Australia and New Zealand offers congratulations to Trident Automotive from Haileybury College, for their stellar performance in the F1 in Schools STEM Challenge™.

This competition saw teams of students, from all over Australia, apply twenty-first century problem solving techniques to build and race a miniature F1 car. Trident Automotive achieved ninth place in the competition.

KANZ was a Silver Sponsor of Trident Automotive. This helped to support these students’ learning through the F1 in Schools STEM Challenge™.

Some peers of the students comprising Trident Automotive are racing ahead in their learning through Kumon.

How Kumon supports preschoolers with reading and counting

Kumon’s has helped thousands of preschoolers develop their reading and counting ability. For preschoolers, Kumon has a range of options available, including Kumon’s Pencils Skills Programme.

To shed some light on the experience of our early learners, we spoke to some of parents of preschoolers who have enrolled their children into Kumon to develop their reading and counting ability. Here are their thoughts:

“There’s a period when children are very open and curious. If you can catch them there then the learning kind of happens naturally. It just becomes part of who they are because they are still in their developmental stage.” – Leticia

“When I enrolled my children, both of them had very low muscle tone and their fine motor skills were very poor. They couldn’t even hold a pencil. After walking 800km, Anna hands in her holiday homework

Most students would take time off from homework while embarking on an 800km trek. But not 11-year-old Anna, who kept up-to-date with her Kumon Maths homework while she completed the Camino de Santiago.

The Camino de Santiago, or ‘The Way of Saint James’, follows one of the most significant Christian pilgrimages during the Middle Ages. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List, beginning in the French town of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, near the French-Spanish border, It ends in Santiago de Compostela, a city in north-western Spain.

While Anna spent 26 days trekking she completed her Kumon Maths work with her cousins. Anna carried her homework wrapped in a plastic bag in her backpack.

“I didn’t want to fall out of the habit of doing my Kumon Maths homework. I thought I might fall behind if I didn’t do it on the trip”, Anna says. “My two cousins who were with me on the trip also do Kumon. We helped each other during the evenings when we had lots of spare time”.

Paula, Anna’s mother, said she was impressed with Anna’s dedication. She also says Kumon boosted Anna’s confidence.

“Anna likes to achieve, I think she’s seen herself improve over time”, Paula says.

“I think she gets a lot of satisfaction from Kumon. It’s not easy; she’s struggled sometimes, but I think it’s given her a good sense of what she can do.”

Anna aspires to be a doctor or scientist when she grows up. She would also like to star in a musical. She studies at Kumon Williamstown Education Centre.

Three ways to help your children love learning this summer

With the arrival of the summer holidays, children can play without the interruptions of the classroom. Parents also finally have precious extra time to relax and spend with their children; whether this is on holiday, at the poolside or beach, or just relaxing together to read a favourite book.

The summer holidays are a time to show children that learning can be intriguing and enjoyable! Here are three ways you can help your children love learning this summer holidays.

1. Encourage and engage with their curiosity

A curious mind is eager to learn more, and will serve children well throughout their education and life. Sometimes children ask thousands of questions each day! Answering questions honestly and genuinely will provide opportunities to discuss the question topic in more depth. If neither of you know the answer, then this is an opportunity for you both to find the answer together.

2. Get reading!

Summer is a great time for children to pick up a book, get lost in a story, and learn more while they’re at it!

Keep books by your children’s bedside these holidays, in the playroom—all over the house—and make sure they are in places within children’s reach. Bring books with you on car trips, to the grocery store, anywhere. Rather than handing them an electronic device, hand them a book they love.

3. For the long-term, help them develop a growth mindset

A growth mindset is the belief that one’s abilities and intelligence can be developed with effort and perseverance. Children with a growth mindset realise their effort has a direct impact on their achievement, they acknowledge their current abilities are a starting point for reaching their potential. They are more likely to put in the extra yards needed to succeed.

Kumon is enrolling throughout the summer break. This this could be a time to help you child begin to develop this mindset. Kumon’s programmes help students develop this way of thinking by building students’ confidence through its Maths and English programmes. Kumon Maths and English comes to Warriewood, Sydney

Kumon Maths and English has come to Warriewood, Sydney, to support the learning of all children in the area.

Kumon Warriewood Education Centre is led by Carol Selvaratnam. She was inspired to open her Centre after seeing how her niece, who was previously lagging, behind in maths, benefitted from Kumon.

“I noticed how much her confidence improved. She was no longer afraid of attempting challenging maths questions on her own”, Carol says.

“When she was successful in getting into a selective school’s maths extension class, I was convinced of the benefits of Kumon. I decided I wanted to be part of a system that empowers students to become achievers.”

Kumon Warriewood Education Centre is located in Warriewood Square Shopping Centre, just above Woolworths. It is open from 2:30-6:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Lana masters Kumon English in one year

In just one year with Kumon, Lana went from barely understanding English to communicating fluently.

Lana, 13 years old and in Year 7, was born in Serbia. She attended preschool and early primary school in Belgium, before moving to Australia with her family. Lana spoke Serbian at home. She was educated in French until Year 4.

After moving to Australia, Lana enrolled into the Kumon English programme. She has studied with Kumon Mordialloc Education Centre ever since.

“When I started I knew very little English. Within a year’s work, I was speaking and writing in English with almost no mistakes”, Lana says.

Lana has completed Kumon English. She can read and write at the Year 12 level. In high school,  she is also in the accelerated learning program. She was also elected school captain in primary school.

“Kumon played an essential role in Lana’s English development, especially in essay writing”, says Lana’s mother Natasa. “As she only started to speak English a year prior, Lana becoming school captain in primary school made us extremely proud”, Natasa says.

“Kumon played an essential role in these achievements. We are very grateful”.

Lana wants to become an air force pilot or neurosurgeon when she grows up. She is also enrolled in Kumon Maths. Lana hopes to complete the programme by March next year.

If she achieves this, it means she can solve maths equations that university students study.

Anastasia achieves in Kumon Maths through effort, perseverance

Anastasia, nine years old, knows that through effort and perseverance, she can solve any problem in Kumon Maths. The Year 4 student studies Kumon Maths at the Year 6 level.

Anastasia says Kumon Maths boosted her confidence. Kumon Maths has shown her what she can achieve through effort and perseverance, she says. Anastasia studies at Kumon Beeliar Education Centre. 

“Kumon has helped me to rethink and reset my goals because of my heightened self-belief”, she says.

Anastasia’s goal is to become a cancer researcher.

“My dad recently went through a cancer scare. Watching him, and all the wonderful people at the Fiona Stanley Cancer Centre, who helped him through his ordeal, has inspired me”, Anastasia says.

In Kumon, advanced students’ abilities are adequately stretched, while those struggling can stay back to practise and revise.

Suzana, Anastasia’s mother, says Kumon Maths helped her daughter in many ways.

“Advanced learning helped Anastasia to significantly extend her maths knowledge and to approach all her tasks in a much more positive manner”, Suzana says.

“In my opinion, it is very important that every child reaches their potential. If a child has the capacity to learn ahead of their school grade, then I fully support it”.

Kumon Maths and English comes to Pennant Hills, Sydney

Kumon Maths and English has come to Pennant Hills, Sydney, to support all children’s learning in the area.

Kumon Pennant Hills Education Centre is led by Gigi Jiang, who was inspired to become a Kumon Instructor through her mum’s experience as a childcare director with students who studied Kumon Maths and English.

“She always said Kumon kids had confidence, good learning habits, and made friends easily”, Gigi says.

Gigi says Kumon will help develop children’s potential by engaging the whole family in education.

“Kumon requires that students, parents and Instructors work together to achieve a common study goal”, Gigi says.

“Students will see they are not working alone. One example of this, is that in Kumon, we suggest that parents read with their kids together at home for 10-30 minutes a day, to develop a strong reading habit.”

Kumon Maths and English comes to Mount Druitt, Sydney

Kumon Maths and English has come to Mount Druitt, Sydney, to support the learning of all children in the area.

Kumon Mount Druitt Education Centre is led by Kristine Zamora, a former commercial banking executive and later early childhood educator. She discovered Kumon in 2006 while living in the Philippines.

Two years later Kristine and her family migrated to Australia. Then she enrolled her children into a Kumon Education Centre.

“The most valuable thing about Kumon, is it helps children develop the needed discipline for them to realise their dreams”, Kristine says.

“When fostered well, this discipline is their springboard to their success and achievement”.

Kumon Mount Druitt operates at Mount Druitt Community Hall. The Centre is open on Monday and Thursday afternoons from 2pm to 7pm.

Kristine says her Centre will be a place where students will be motivated and taught how to achieve. And not only in school.

“I endeavour to make a positive impact in the lives of the children of Mount Druitt, by sparking a fire and desire to pursue further education”, Kristine says.

“I want my students to understand the value of resilience and self-learning, to know that the consistent hard work they put in now, will garner a higher return for them in the future”.
