Commitment to privacy

Kumon Australia and New Zealand (“Kumon”) is bound by the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) (“Privacy Act”) and will protect your personal information in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles. These principles govern how we can collect, use, hold and disclose your personal information. Protecting your privacy and the confidentiality of your personal information is fundamental to the way Kumon does business.

Information that we collect and hold

We advise that much of the information that you may have provided or may be asked to provide to Kumon is ‘personal information’ as defined by the Privacy Act. Kumon collects and holds personal information such as the following:

For Students and Guardians:

  • Students’ and Guardians’ Names.
  • Students’ Date of birth.
  • Students’ Gender.
  • Students’ School year.
  • Contact details.
  • Credit card details when you make payment.
  • Information regarding the subjects your child is interested in/would like to be tutored in.
  • Information contained in the Student Enrolment form.

We may also collect Students’ health information, such as allergies or medical conditions, where reasonably necessary to support their health needs. Providing this information is optional, and we will only collect and hold it if Guardians choose to share it with us.

For Franchisees:

  • Contact details.
  • Company details.
  • Family and relationship details.
  • Citizenship and residency details.
  • Education, qualifications, and professional expertise.
  • Employment history, including roles, employers, and salary information.
  • Business interests and experience.
  • Financial information, including bank account and credit card details, profit and loss statements, balance sheets, weekly takings information, and other business-related information that may contain personal information.
  • Health information.
  • Legal history and criminal record.
  • Insolvency and directorship history.

How we collect and hold your personal information

We typically collect and hold such information:

  • by requesting students to fill out a Student Enrolment Form which is completed by the student’s parent or guardian,
  • from prospective franchisees who register their details with us online and/or apply to become a franchisee and fill out an Information Request Report; or
  • from current franchisees through the process to become a franchisee.

We also collect personal information when parents, guardians, prospective franchisees or current franchisees contact us to make an enquiry or give us feedback.

We may store your information in hard copy or electronic format, in storage facilities that we own and operate ourselves, or that are owned and operated by our service providers. We take reasonable steps to maintain the security of your information and to protect it from unauthorised disclosures.

Purpose of collecting, holding, using and disclosing personal information

Collection of your personal information is required for the following purposes:

  • Administering our Kumon Education Centres;
  • Monitoring and improving the performance of the students and our Kumon Education Centres;
  • Developing and improving the Kumon learning materials and instructional methods for use domestically and internationally;
  • Providing training to employees of Kumon and its related entities, and instructors of Kumon Education Centres domestically and internationally;
  • Opening, managing, and developing Kumon Education Centres domestically and internationally;
  • Providing training to franchisees;
  • Providing updates about Kumon franchise opportunities; and
  • Any other purposes the student’s parent/guardian has been given notice of in the Student Enrolment Form or otherwise.

We may also use your personal information to keep you informed of upcoming events and/or to offer you our products or services that we believe may interest you. If you do not want to receive such communications from us, please contact us.

Disclosure of your personal information

In accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles, your personal information may only be disclosed (i) to you and your parent/guardian (if you are a minor), (ii) as may be required or authorised by or under an Australian law or a court/tribunal order, or (iii) to Kumon’s overseas related entities including, but not limited to Kumon Institute of Education Co., Ltd, located in Japan, and its local and global affiliates and licensees. Such disclosure of personal information to these overseas recipients will be made only for the purposes outlined above. Any sensitive information, such as a Student or Franchisee’s health information, will not be disclosed to Kumon’s related entities.

Access and correction

Complaints procedure

If you have any queries or complaints regarding our approach to compliance with the Australian Privacy Principles, you may contact our Privacy Officer on +61 2 9467 2200 or privacy@kumon.com.au.

All complaints will be considered by our Privacy Officer, and we may seek further information from you to clarify your concerns. If we agree that your complaint is well founded, we will take appropriate steps to rectify the problem. If you are not satisfied with our response to your complaint, you may make a complaint to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner by using the contact details on the website www.oaic.gov.au.
