From falling behind to budding computer scientist

jwells

With Kumon’s help, 19-year-old James Jovanowski turned around his performance in school and achieved entry into his preferred university.

James now studies a double degree Bachelor of Computer Science and Bachelor of Science at the University of Sydney. But he was not always so strong in his academics. By the time he started high school, James was falling behind his classmates.

So, James enrolled into the Kumon Mathematics and English programmes. He began to see improvement shortly afterwards.

“I believe Kumon helped drastically in terms of my mathematical performance”, James said. “Literature-wise, it also did help. It taught me how to take a step back and look at how the texts, or how words or sentences flow from one to the other.”

James also said Kumon is still helping him to this day at university.

“In terms of my personality, Kumon did help me to develop resilience”, he explained. “When I have to go through my exam book,  or when I have some assignments, quizzes, exams due, when it’s all piling up, I make sure to keep a clear mind and push forward.”

“It’s very rewarding to know that at the end of the day, you’ve powered through and you’ve done the best that you can.”

After graduating from university, James hopes to work in software development or computer science.

Kumon partners with Little Athletics NSW

jwells

We are pleased to announce Kumon Australia and New Zealand has entered into a partnership with Little Athletics NSW. Both Kumon and Little Athletics NSW are committed to developing children’s potential.

Kumon understands the connection between healthy bodies and healthy minds. Eating nutritious food and undertaking regular exercise helps students achieve their best, both on the sports field and at school.

Students and athletes also both understand the importance of persistence, practice and hard work in order to achieve results. This is why Kumon and Little Athletics have chosen to work together throughout 2021.

“When our students encounter a new problem, they keep trying until they are able to solve it. They also understand that the right amount of practice lays the foundation for smooth progress. This is similar to young athletes who keep trying and continue practising until they achieve their goals”, said Esther Head, Public Relations Division Leader at Kumon Australia and New Zealand.

“When Kumon and Little Athletics NSW realised the synergy between our organisations, we negotiated a partnership.”

This partnership means Kumon will support the 2021 Kumon State Combined Carnival, to be held from Saturday 6 March to Sunday 7 March in Wollongong, the Little Athletics NSW Coach of the Year Award, and various local Little Athletics NSW events throughout 2021.

“We welcome Kumon to the Little Athletics NSW family knowing that we both encourage development by providing opportunities for personal growth,” said Rebecca Shaw, Chief Executive Officer at Little Athletics NSW.

“We promote education, sportsmanship, self-esteem and the development of life skills through engaging in athletics, very similar to the way Kumon provides opportunities to their students”.

Should you wish to learn more about this partnership, please feel welcome to contact Kumon via our enquiry form: https://au.kumonglobal.com/contact-us/general-enquiry/

Tan builds foundation to excel in selective school

jwells

By completing the Kumon Mathematics and English programmes, 17-year-old Tan Nguyen has the skills to excel throughout selective school and later in life.

Tan, now in Year 12 at school, enrolled into Kumon when he was in Year 7. Tan said his studies at Kumon have helped him greatly throughout selective schooling.

“Kumon has helped me understand and hone my ability with fundamental mathematic topics such as algebra and calculus, as well as improving my English ability”, Tan said “However, I believe the greatest benefits of Kumon is the way it fosters characteristics such as perseverance, discipline, and the ability to independently learn, which has been carried over to other subjects outside of Maths and English.”

Tan hopes to major in mathematics and statistics at university. He will continue to use the skills he learnt at Kumon in university.

“Learning new things and skills will still be a big part of my life so that I’m able to further my career”, Tan said. “Kumon has helped me develop key characteristics that will enable me to further develop myself professionally and as a person.”

Kumon places Abeer on path towards becoming a mathematician

jwells

By studying the Kumon Mathematics programme at a level that is five years ahead of his school grade level, eight-year-old Abeer is well on his away to achieving his dream of becoming a mathematician.

Abeer, who begins Year 4 this year, comfortably studies Year 9 level mathematics at Kumon Byford Education Centre. Abeer says because of his advanced study at Kumon, he is confident in the classroom.

“Kumon gave me resilience, confidence, and taught me to never give up”, Abeer says.

Abeer loves to problem solve and is particularly interested in equations. This is why he would like to become a mathematician when he grows up.

Joyna and Dharmendra, Abeer’s mother and father, enrolled their son into Kumon to develop him into an independent learner.

“Kumon is a self-learning process. The children are encouraged to study the worksheets and find out the answers on their own”, Joyna and Dharmendra say.

“If they struggle somewhere, then the Kumon Instructor will help them. So, that is the most important thing I think, I wanted my kid to be an independent learner.”

Joyna and Dharmendra say they were very proud when they found out that Abeer was studying Kumon Mathematics five years ahead of his school grade. Abeer also studies the Kumon English programme three years ahead of his school grade.

Kumon Mathematics is coming to Bendigo in 2021!

jwells

A team of highly experienced educators is bringing the Kumon Mathematics programme to the Bendigo region.

Tim Hewitson, Amanda King, Justinne Liberty and Akane Komatsu, who collectively have 110 years of experience leading and supporting Kumon centres all across Australia and New Zealand, are the Instructors of Kumon Bendigo Education Centre.

So that Kumon is brought to Bendigo as quickly as possible, this centre will begin as a virtual space of learning.

“We want to be flexible with how we provide Kumon”, said Akane Komatsu, an Instructor at Kumon Bendigo. “Kumon has been in Bendigo before. There is a demand in the community already. Now is the right time. So, we thought, ‘Let’s start right away virtually!’”

Being established for over 60 years and with millions of students enrolled, Kumon is the world’s largest after-school education programme. Kumon is tailored for the learning needs of each student. Instructors build an individualised study plan for each student so they can progress through the programme at a level determined by their ability rather than age.

At Kumon Bendigo students will join small group virtual classes once or twice a week, also complete approximately 30 minutes of daily study on non-class days.

“Kumon sessions are short, sharp and sweet. You join for 30 minutes either once or twice a week”, said Tim Hewitson, another Instructor at Kumon Bendigo. “On the other days, children study their Kumon worksheets at home with the support of their parents. There is no need to join virtual classes every day. We think it’s just the right amount of time and support.”

In addition to developing a strong foundation in mathematics, Kumon has many lifelong benefits for students.

“Children grow in confidence and gain important life skills, like perseverance and how to be organised”, said Tim. “They develop a daily study routine.”

To enrol or to learn more about Kumon Bendigo Education Centre, families are welcome to ring 0410 454 767 or email kumonbendigo@kumon.com.au

Kumon extends Dhruv far beyond school grade in mathematics and English

jwells

Dhruv, six years old and in Year 1 at school, says the highly advanced mathematics and English he is studying now at Kumon will help him achieve his goal of becoming a neurosurgeon.

Dhruv studies the Mathematics and English programmes, at Kumon Cottesloe Education Centre, far ahead of his school grade. He is comfortably studying algebra in Kumon Mathematics and is interpreting texts in Kumon English.

Dhruv said Kumon has helped him in many ways.

“Kumon helped me by improving my speed, accuracy and knowledge in mathematical concepts way beyond my school years”, Dhruv said “Kumon English has helped me with my comprehension, vocabulary and spelling.”

“Kumon has also helped me by letting me work at my brain level rather than my age level, and with discipline and focus.”

In addition to becoming a neurosurgeon, Dhruv wants to become a theoretical mathematician, a scientist and inventor. He is confident that if he continues to persevere and put in the right amount of effort, he will achieve all of his goals.

“Kumon has showed me my strengths and also taught me never to give up. If you put your mind into something and try hard you will definitely [achieve your goal]”, Dhruv said.

Soumya, Dhruv’s mother, said she chose to enrol Dhruv into Kumon after seeing the rapid progress his sister Diya made through her worksheets.

“I had enrolled my daughter in Kumon and saw how much Kumon was advancing her and improving her academic skillset”, Soumya said. “Dhruv, we knew was very academically inclined at a young age ever since he started reading at 12 months as a baby.”

“He had already memorised all the elements of the periodic table, the countries of the world by age 2 by watching videos on his own. We knew that, to keep him stimulated, we needed to enrol him in something that can extend him.”

Soumya said she also believes Kumon can help any child to learn maths and English beyond school grade level.

“Kumon can not only advance your child, but also can cover all the gaps in concepts that the child might have had due to lack of practise or lack of knowledge”, Soumya said.

“Kumon is structured in such a way that it will make your child’s basics very strong, which is extremely important for later years in school and university. If the foundation is strong then the rest of the academic school journey will be a lot smoother.”

“I think Kumon is a great program for kids who need some extra help and also for kids who are advanced and looking for enrichment.”

Kumon Mathematics prepares young aspiring engineer for his future

jwells

Teii, 11 years old and an aspiring engineer and computer designer, is confident that the advanced mathematics he is studying in Kumon will help him in his future career.

Teii comfortably studies the Mathematics programme at the Year 11 level at Kumon South Perth Education Centre, despite being only in Year 5 at school. He says Kumon has helped him in school and will help him later on in everyday life.

“I tend to finish my regular school work efficiently and fast”, Teii said. “Kumon will also help me for my jobs in the future and in everyday life. For example, in cooking, paying, depositing and much more. Mathematics is an everyday thing.”

Grace, Teii’s mother, says she was already familiar with Kumon as he was born in Tokyo, Japan. She enrolled Teii into Kumon when he was four years old, and continued his studies when they moved to Australia.

“I think Kumon is a great place can help your children to grow their self-learning and problem-solving ability. There is no competition here”, Grace says.

“The more you try in Kumon, the more progress you make and the children can feel more and more confident during this process. I recommend parents send their children at early age if they can.”

Grace says that during his time at Kumon, Teii has developed strong study habits and has grown confident in his own abilities. She is also extremely proud that her son is able to study Kumon Mathematics five years ahead of his school grade level.

Brisbane siblings build their foundation for advanced mathematics

jwells

By completing the Kumon Mathematics programme, siblings Isini, Isuka and Helitha Muthumuni have built a strong foundation in mathematics which will be of lifelong benefit.

Isini, 21 years old and studying medicine at the University of Queensland, said the mental calculation and self-learning ability she developed at Kumon by completing the Mathematics programme, helped her greatly throughout school and university. Self-learning is the ability to take in information, process, retain and understand it, without having to rely on being taught every new topic or concept.

During school, Isini received the Queensland ICAS Medal for Mathematics in Year 10 and was selected as one of 64 students in Australia to attend the National Mathematics Summer School in Year 12. Kumon played a key role in these achievements, Isini said. Her interest and aptitude for mathematics was sparked by Kumon.

“I think maths is something you will use in any avenue”, Isini said. “While medicine is not specifically a career in maths, in analysis and statistics maths does help a lot.”

Isini said the daily study habit and perseverance she developed through Kumon is also of great value. Her younger brother Isuka, 16 years old and a Year 11 high school student, said studying and completing Kumon Mathematics gave him the confidence to know he can excel.

“With the strong skills that Kumon has provided me, it is easier to pursue my interest in mathematics or science”, Isuka said. “Any career in math or science applies the mental calculation and self-learning I’ve developed from Kumon.”

Isuka said he wants to follow in the footsteps of his sister Isini to study medicine. He also received high distinction scores in the Australian Mathematics Competition.

Helitha, 12 years old, a Year 7 high school student and younger brother of Isini and Isuka, is also a completer of the Kumon Mathematics programme. This means he has already mastered senior high school mathematical concepts like equations, factorisation and calculus.

“It has been a great relief to have completed maths at an advanced level. It feels like I’ve accomplished a great achievement by completing all the levels in Kumon,” Helitha said. “Completing Kumon Mathematics is helping me in school by improving my maths to an advanced level. It is why I passed the scholarship test to gain entry into a private school.

“Kumon helped me in my mental arithmetic and calculations, and it’s helped me find methods and solutions to solve equations.”

Once Helitha grows up, he wants to pursue a career in mathematics or science.

Isini said herself, Helitha and Isuka could not have achieved so much without the support of their Kumon centre.

“The three of us would like to offer our thanks and gratitude to Mr. and Mrs. Park from Kumon Calamvale for the dedication and guidance they provided us throughout our Kumon journey”, Isini said.
