Education Gets Clarinda Community Talking on Harmony Day

It’s not every day you hear a tutoring centre declared as ‘A massive positive snowball!’, but Clarinda educator Sanjiv Tolat can’t hide his excitement. He’s building a community, and contribution is at the heart of it.

With Harmony Day right around the corner, there is no better time for communities to come together and embody the official message of this day of cultural respect: ‘Everyone belongs’.

Sanjiv’s Kumon Centre, which is nestled amidst the Sundowner Community Centre, has become a catchment for community connection where individuals cross cultural boundaries and come together through sharing the value of education.

‘We are having a huge positive impact on young minds, their growth and development. All these results have got the families talking and sharing.’ he said.

After 20 years of working closely with the parents and children of Clarinda, Sanjiv has witnessed the community become richly multicultural.

‘The demographic has certainly changed. The area now caters for recent, young migrant families. Our programmes enable the breaking-of-ice for these families’ he said.

The centre has become renowned for stories of academic success with some students studying as much as 3 years ahead of their school grade level. These stories have got the community talking.

‘A good number of students are making it through to selective schools and are gaining entry to prestigious and sought after universities and courses’.

‘Consistent and constant ‘feel-good’ stories have an uncanny way of lending momentum to the pay-it-forward movement and get people talking’ said Sanjiv.

Sanjiv sees his education centre as contributing to more than just good results at school. ‘In my opinion, Kumon is not just an education programme or even a service - it's a movement! Good practices, positive thinkers, individuals and families coming together and striving for excellence - it’s a massive positive snowball!’ said Sanjiv.

Harmony Day is celebrated on March 21st. The Day coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
