Kumon: Helping your child build strong skills in maths and reading

What the latest NAPLAN results show  naplan kumon maths reading

The latest NAPLAN results, released in July, give us a snapshot of how Australian students are doing in literacy and numeracy. The good news is that two-thirds of students achieved at ‘Strong’ or ‘Exceeding’ levels, with overall improvements in numeracy.

But the results also show that many children are still struggling to meet expected standards. This has left some parents wondering whether their child is really building the skills they will need for future learning.

With this in mind, it’s natural for parents to ask:

  • Is my child keeping up with the basics?
  • Do they feel confident when it comes to maths and reading?
  • How can I support their learning?

Why strong foundations in maths and reading matter

Maths and reading are the building blocks for every other part of learning. When children feel confident in these areas, they can approach new subjects with less stress and more independence in their learning.

Education experts, such as the Grattan Institute, have recently reminded us that real improvement in learning depends on building knowledge and skills, step by step, year after year. A strong, logical foundation helps children grow into confident, capable learners.

How Kumon helps

This is where Kumon can make a difference. Our programmes in Maths and English are designed to strengthen core skills through small, daily steps. Children build confidence as they become proficient in each topic, and over time, this steady growth leads to higher-order thinking and greater independence in learning.

While NAPLAN provides a snapshot of progress at one point in time, Kumon focuses on the long term. By developing strong skills in maths and reading, Kumon students are not only better prepared for school assessments, they’re also gaining the skills and confidence that will support them through school and beyond.
