Kumon is now open in Highfields, in Queensland’s Toowoomba Region, to help all local children develop confidence in the basics of maths and reading.
Kumon Highfields Education Centre is led by Kirsten Woodcroft Woolston, a former commercial lawyer, Kumon student, and Kumon parent. As the first woman in her family to complete high school and university, Kirsten truly appreciates the lifechanging benefits of quality education.
“I have had some involvement or other with Kumon for over 30 years. I did Kumon Maths as a child and teenager, as did my brother and sister”, Kirsten says. “We have seven degrees between us, including law, teaching, and medicine.”
“My own children did Kumon during the pandemic and it was the best decision I ever made sending them, as it has set both children up well for schooling during what was an incredibly turbulent time with the long lockdowns in Brisbane at the very start of their schooling.”
“Statistics prove that a person’s quality and longevity of life is linked to education. The better the quality of education a community has, the more it and its members thrive.”
Kirsten wants Kumon’s quality afterschool Maths and English programmes to contribute to the overall wellbeing of the Highfields community.
“The short-term benefits of Kumon include an increase in a sense of accomplishment and measurable growth in skill and confidence”, Kirsten explains. “The long-term benefits include the growth mindset attained through Kumon. For a student to know they can do difficult things because they have done them before through effort, is a great power.”
“To know that your goals are not limited by your natural talents but only by how much effort and work you are prepared to put in, sets a hugely positive self-fulfilling realisation.”
“Kumon is a true grassroots programme”, she continues. “By focusing on the basics and giving children and their parents a framework of security and support, each child can reach their full potential and contribute back to their community.”
Kumon Highfields is located at 2/10481 New England Highway, Highfields, QLD 4352. Classes operate on Monday and Tuesday afternoons from 3:30pm to 6:30pm, and on Thursday and Friday afternoons from 3:30pm to 5:30pm.
Kirsten looks forward to welcoming many new Kumon families to her centre.
“Highfields is a booming growth corridor with many young families pouring into the region and I believe that these families deserve access to the same quality education opportunities as their capital city counterparts,” Kirsten says.
“I am so looking forward to being an Instructor and sharing all the benefits of the Kumon programme with a new generation of children and parents.”
