As such, it’s reasonable to argue there is strong recognition among parents in both countries of early learning. Therefore in this article we discuss the importance of early learning and the role that the Kumon Programmes can play.

The importance of early learning

Defined as formal learning programmes or curriculums that provides education, outside of the home, prior to a child entering primary school, quality early childhood education lays the foundation for children to grow into lifelong learners.

This is due to the rapid development of children’s brains during their early years. At the age of three, a child has 1000 trillion brain synapses. These synapses are the tiny connections between neurons; the cells that make up a person’s brain and central nervous system.

As the child grows older, these synapses are naturally and selectively pruned by the brain By adolescence, it’s estimated an individual’s brain has 500 trillion of these synapses. And this process isn’t random.

“It is the experiences and relationships that infants and young children have that continuously develop their brains and build the neural circuits that will be the foundation for later development”, summarises the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) in a fact card.

This isn’t to say that teens and adults can’t learn new things. Rather, quality early education experiences, from infancy to the beginning of high school, build the foundation for lifelong learning and achievement.

How Kumon supports the growth of our youngest minds

Kumon has long recognised the importance of early learning in supporting children to reaching their potential.

“Children display astonishing progress if exposed to right stimuli during infancy”, stated Toru Kumon, Kumon’s late founder.

“The ability of preschoolers is limitless but we [adults] are the ones who draw out their potential.”

Kumon’s approach in supporting early learning is to develop students’ basic foundations in maths and English.

Through Kumon Maths, early learners develop their counting ability. Those who are ready hone their calculation skills through solving problems in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

In Kumon English, early learners learn to read words, phrases and sentences. They are also instructed on properly writing letters and spelling words. Those who are ready progress to reading and summarising passages from texts.

Hockey, karate, Kumon; 12-year-old Seth is a busy boy. Despite his schedule, the Year 6 student can comfortably study Kumon Maths and English ahead of his school grade level.

Seth is two years ahead of his school grade in Kumon Maths and one year ahead in Kumon English. In Kumon Maths, he covers content that Year 8 students are working through. In Kumon English, he is interpreting excerpts from books like Weather Eye by Lesley Howarth.

Kumon Maths and English are personalised after-school tuition programmes. Advanced students can go ahead to study content that is above their school grade, while those who may be falling behind can go back to practise and revise.

Seth has been recently selected in the Southern Tasmanian U12 representative team as goalkeeper. He is also an orange belt in karate.

“Like studying Kumon every day, I know that to do well in hockey and karate, I have to be dedicated”, Seth says.

Seth studies at Kumon North Hobart Education Centre, which is ranked as one of three best tutors in Hobart. This Centre is led by his mother Carmel Davies.

“Seth was really why I opened Kumon North Hobart Education Centre in 2017”, Carmel explains.

“He was still spelling phonetically when we moved from WA to Tassie while he was in Year 2; I think he missed out on something fundamental earlier on. I think the practise built into both Kumon Maths and English was key”.

Carmel also says that Kumon’s benefits go beyond academics.

“It’s helped Seth develop positive habits, created routine, so he can manage his studies as well as all his other extracurricular activities”, Carmel says.

Seth’s story was also covered in the Hobart Observer. Click here to read more.

Serena Halligan, a Ballarat perioperative nurse and the daughter of an educator of hundreds of Victorian children, was once a reluctant student.

Serena’s mother Pam Halligan, from 1990 to 2006, was the Instructor of two Kumon Education Centres in Melbourne.

Kumon is a personalised after-school maths and English programme. In Kumon, students study at their own pace. This means students who are struggling take the time they need to master a concept, while advanced students race ahead.

“When I started out as a Kumon student in the late 1980s, my maths skills were pretty poor. I was not a great student”, Serena says. “When I started helping out at my mum’s Centre at the age of 12, my enthusiasm for Kumon surprisingly changed”.

“I was happy to sit down and work through the Kumon worksheets without any prompting”.

Pam retired from Kumon after receiving a diagnosis of multiple myeloma in 2006. Serena then moved to Ballarat to begin a career in nursing.

“Kumon kept popping into my head”, Serena says. “There hadn’t been a Kumon Education Centre in Ballarat for many years. I knew that I wanted my twin boys, Finn and Hugo, to experience Kumon.”

“This is how the second part of my Kumon journey began.”

Serena is set to open Kumon Ballarat Education Centre on August 19. She is proud to be following in her mother’s footsteps.

“Last year my mum’s health deteriorated. After undergoing last line treatments, she passed away in October 2018”, Serena says. “Before her passing, I was able to tell my mum that I was planning to open Kumon Ballarat and that my first enrolments would be her grandsons Finn and Hugo.”

“I knew that she would be so proud and excited about this next chapter for our family.”

Ballarat is experiencing rapid population and demographic changes due to many families moving in from Melbourne. As such, Serena believes Kumon will be a great boon for the community.

“Kumon nurtures young minds by instilling lifelong skills that lead to confidence and strong academic ability”, Serena says.

Kumon Ballarat will open on August 19. It will operate from one2one Gillies Street Church of Christ on Mondays and Thursdays, from 3pm to 6pm. For more information, please contact Serena on 0432 258 313 or email kumon.ballarat@gmail.com.

After trialing Kumon for free in 2013, nine year old Shiva Srinivasan stuck with it and now is way ahead in maths and English.

Shiva, who is in Year 4 at primary school, is studying Kumon Maths at the Year 8 level and has completed Kumon English, meaning she has the literacy skills of a Year 12 student. Shiva is also the youngest English Completer in Australia listed in the latest Advanced Student Honour Roll.

“Kumon English has helped me with my reading and comprehension skills. It has given me so much confidence at school”, Shiva says.

“Kumon Maths has given me mental maths skills so I don’t have to use my fingers and toes to count.”

“Kumon has also helped me learn to overcome challenges through perseverance, discipline, dedication and a never give up attitude. This will help me realise my dreams of inspiring and helping the world.”

Shiva aspires to become a vet when she grows up. She studies at Kumon East Victoria Park Education Centre, led by her father Sri Ayyalusamy.

Studying both the Kumon Maths and English programmes supports the development of students’ foundational numeracy and literacy skills.

According to the Queensland Department of Education and Training, numeracy enables students to develop logical thinking and reasoning strategies. They need these qualities in order to solve problems and make sense of time, numbers, patterns and shapes. This supports them in activities like cooking, reading a map or bill, reading instructions, and even playing sport.

Strong literacy skills are equally important, according to the Queensland Department of Education and Training. Literacy enables children to make sense of written, visual and spoken texts. This includes books, newspapers, magazines, timetables, television, radio, signs, maps, conversations and instructions.

The study of literacy also supports students with their numeracy. Research published in the Journal of Educational Research and Practice, indicated that English native language proficiency is a predictor of students’ maths scores.

This backs up assertions made by Toru Kumon, Kumon’s late founder.

“Many of the students who cannot calculate the answers [in maths] do not understand the meaning of the questions”, Toru Kumon said.

“They cannot figure out the answers because their reading comprehension is poor.”

Aside from literacy and numeracy skills, the Kumon Maths and English programmes also support students in developing vital skills. This includes identifying and interpreting information, critical and creative thinking, transferring knowledge into new contexts and a disciplined approach to learning every single day.

Studying both programmes at the same time, can also further enhance reasoning and communication skills in the classroom, and beyond.

He might only be six years old, but Kalash’s maths ability is already reaching astronomical heights.

Kalash, who is in Year 1, studies the Kumon Maths programme at the Year 7 level.

“Kumon has helped me a lot in school, I’m mostly the very first to finish my work”, Kalash says. “I feel really happy and confident.”

Kalash wants to become an astronaut when he grows up. Maths is his favourite subject.

“In maths, we build up a lot of confidence by solving different kinds of problems in different ways”, Kalash says.

Kumon Maths and English are personalised learning after-school tuition programmes which allow students to study at their own pace. This means advanced students, like Kalash, can go ahead to study content that is above their school grade, while those who may be falling behind can go back to practise and revise.

Sanjeev, Kalash’s father, says Kumon has supported his son to become an independent learner.

“He can now think through problems by himself, he can solve them by himself”, Sanjeev says. “He’s no longer dependent on me”.
