Soaring to the top of the class
Just over one year ago, Rebecca enrolled her son Daniel in both Kumon English and Kumon Maths. At the time, Daniel (Year 3) was starting to struggle with his class work. We caught up with Rebecca to hear how Daniel has progressed one year on.

So what was Rebecca’s original reason for enrolling Daniel in Kumon?
‘Daniel struggled immensely with understanding new concepts at school. He wasn’t confident enough to know that he could do it. When he was in Year 2, his teachers started raising the idea of getting him some support’ shared Rebecca.
‘A big reason I chose Kumon is because I saw that it was very structured. Daniel needs structure. He knows what is expected of him and what he has to do when he has structure.’
Kumon’s step-by-step approach allowed Daniel to focus on one new concept at a time, giving him the opportunity to practice as much as he needed to before moving on to the next topic. ‘That has been amazing for Daniel, it’s exactly what he needed’ said Rebecca. ‘When we started, he was probably sitting in the bottom 25% of his class, and now he’s in the top 25%, in 12 months.’
School is different for Daniel now, and his teachers have noticed the change in his attitude towards learning. ‘During our last teacher interview, the teacher was very happy with Daniel. He’s a lot more focused and self-confident in what he can do, especially with maths because he knows he has the techniques to work it out’ said Rebecca.
‘He’s like a maths whiz now! He knows his times tables like the back of his hand. We’ll come across a question and before I’ve got time to grab a calculator and calculate it he’s already told me what the answer is. In my wildest dreams I’d never thought that would happen!’
Daniel’s daily effort with Kumon has not only given him keen mental calculation skills, but has given him self-belief.
‘He now calls himself ‘smart’. I’ve always known he’s been smart but now he believes it about himself’ said Rebecca. ‘Kumon was the best decision I ever made for Daniel. Maths has now clicked with him and we’ve never looked back.’
