Anthony has been studying at Kumon for just over two years. In that time, Anthony has gone from studying material below his grade level to now solving maths problems two years advanced of his peers.
For Anthony, mastering Year 8 algebra at Kumon while still in Year 6 means he can look towards high school with confidence. “Kumon helps me at school because I don’t feel pressured. I already know what we’re doing in class and I can help people. There’s no pressure at all. I feel a lot more confident knowing I can do something even if it’s challenging,” Anthony said.
An aspiring author, Anthony also recently enrolled in the English Programme. “The English Programme involves creating sentences and that helps me a lot because a story is all about how you describe things which you use sentences with,” he said.
Anthony’s father, Archie, believes Kumon has equipped his son with strong academic skills as well as key learning habits. “After three to six months of studying Kumon, I noticed him becoming more disciplined with his studies. Every time he comes home, he does his Kumon. It’s a habit for him,” he said.
“I know how to self-learn because of Kumon,” Anthony said. “My Instructor has taught me that before I ask questions, I must read the question and the paragraphs carefully or see the examples of how to solve the sum so it’s easier for me.”
Archie advises new Kumon families to have a thorough understanding of the Kumon Method and the patience to allow their child time to discover their potential. “Most parents don’t have any patience to wait. Some of them comment that the questions are similar each day but they don’t understand that kids need that mastery before they move on to the next topic. I can see how my kids are doing well because we’ve been patient with them. It takes time, it’s not magic!” Archie said.
In his free time, Anthony takes speed skating lessons and is a talented artist. He has also been awarded for his kindness and cooperation by winning the the Spirit Award at his school.
